Chances are you’re really familiar with those words if you suffer from bruxism, that anxiety-induced nighttime clenching and grinding of the teeth. Even though they’re made of the hardest material the body can produce, your teeth need to be protected from each other to prevent cracking, wearing, and breaking while you bite and clench. DenTek’s nightguards give you the quality, custom-fit protection you need.
Fitting Instructions
If you have the “boil” nightguard here is what you need to begin:
a cup of room temperature water
a pot of boiling water
a metal kitchen spoon
a timer
TEST FITTING
Before you begin boiling, conduct a “test” fitting.
Place the nightguard on your upper teeth and bite down.
Make sure that the “v” notch on the front of the nightguard is centered in the middle of your front two teeth. If it extends past your back molars and feels uncomfortable, you will need to trim it.
Use scissors and begin at the first line from the end on each side and test fit again. If it is still too long, trim again, but remember that the optimal fit is when all teeth are properly centered and resting on the DenTek Custom Comfort Nightguard.
FINAL FITTING
After completing the test fitting, you are now ready to custom fit DenTek Nightguard.
Fill pot with approximately three inches of water. Boil water until you see a rolling boil with bubbles. Remove the pot from the heating element and let rest for 30 seconds.
Place the DenTe Custom Comfort Nightguard face down into hot water for 40 seconds.
Remove it with a metal spoon or fork and let air dry for 15 seconds to reduce the heat before fitting.
While looking in a mirror, place in your mouth and align the center of the nightguard between your front two teeth so that all your teeth rest on the nightguard. You may need to squeeze or stretch the back to align it with the arch of your mouth.
Press in on the nightguard under your lips using your fingers, along the gum line with equal amounts of pressure on both sides of the “v” from the front of the teeth to the side teeth, molding the soft material up and around your teeth and gum line. Once everything is lined up, bite down firmly into the DenTek Custom Comfort Nightguard.
Suck in to remove excess moisture and create a vacuum that lets the nightguard stay in place comfortably.
Leave the nightguard in your mouth for two minutes to allow the material to firmly set up for a secure fit.
If you did not get a good fit for the first time, repeat the boiling process one more time starting at Step 1 of the Final Fitting process. However, after a second attempt, the material loses retention and you will need to contact us to request a replacement DenTek Custom Comfort Nightguard.

What is Bruxism?
It's the word dentists use to describe teeth grinding, and while you may have never heard the term before, chances are you have felt its impact. Some of us brux while we sleep. Bruxism is a subconscious behavior - most of us who are doing it aren't even aware of it!
Some people grind with such force that they could crack a walnut in their teeth! Imagine, over time, what this kind of force can do to your teeth, gums, and facial alignment. Bruxism can wreak havoc on your oral health and overall well-being, and can damage one of the most wonderful things about you-your smile.
How do you know if you brux?
You might awaken in the morning with a headache or sore jaw and facial muscle pain that dissipates throughout the day. You may also have teeth that are painful, loosened or worn down from prolonged teeth grinding. Many people learn they are bruxing from their dentist or dental hygienist during a check-up that their teeth, gums and/or bite appear to be suffering the effects of nighttime grinding, while some learn from the sleep partner because grinding is so loud it wakes them.
Stress and Teeth Grinding
Up to 20% of the U.S. population suffers from Bruxism and for many of us; the major culprit can be stress. The secret to co-existing with stress is not necessarily eliminating it from daily life (that's hard to do!) but rather in managing it as best we can. We’ve come up with some relaxation tips to help you do exactly that:
4 Ways To Relax For Better Sleep
Make your ‘to do’ list for tomorrow before putting on your pajamas. It’s easier to clear your mind if you’ve downloaded your thoughts before bed.
Get into bed twenty minutes before you actually want to be asleep. This allows you a few minutes to decompress and wind down.
Practice breathing. In the nose, out the nose. Listen to the sound of your own breath. Keep the tip of the tongue against the roof of your mouth. This releases the jaw.
Wear your DenTek® Custom Comfort Nightguard every night.
Other causes of Bruxism
While for many of us the main cause for bruxism may be stress, tension and anxiety, bruxism can also be brought on by real dental concerns such as an abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or crooked. Bruxism may also be caused by complications of another disorder, such as sleep disorders or sinus disorders. It can be a side effect of some psychiatric medications including antidepressants.
Other psychological and/or emotional factors can also cause bruxism. These include:
Suppressed anger or frustration Type 'A' personalities - hard-driving, competitive individuals
Symptoms and Effects
Bruxism can cause considerable damage to your dental health, which in turn, can affect your overall health…
Headaches: When grinding, you clench your teeth together causing you to over-exert the muscles in your jaw, head and face. This also puts extreme pressure on your teeth. Overworked and fatigued muscles result in pain which often travels to the head after a night of grinding.
Neck and Shoulder Pain: The muscles in the jaw are closely interrelated with the muscles in the neck and shoulder. Grinding can overtax the muscles in your jaw, forcing the muscles in the neck and shoulder to compensate for the fatigued jaw muscles and thus, causing them to ache in the morning.
Tooth Damage: Grinding exerts extreme pressure on the teeth which can result in enamel wear, tooth breakage and uncomfortable sensitivity every time you bite down.
Jaw Pain: Grinding is also a cause of TMJ disorder – a painful condition that affects millions of people each year.

I bought this product with high hopes! But, was disappointed.
It felt much like a sports mouth guard that I had worn in high school; I woke during the night because of my mouth being sore, and it was hard to keep my lips closed. It DID stop the grinding, so I may have dealt with this pain.. but the last straw was waking up the next morning and feeling my front teeth were not aligned the same! I couldn't eat breakfast because each time I chewed, my front teeth now touched my bottom front teeth!
I then read that if not fitted properly, these can re-align your teeth. So keep this in mind when purchasing.
I returned the product to my local store and instead purchased the lower-teeth NO BOIL self adjust product. It adds some pressure to your inner cheeks, but prevents grinding, I can keep my mouth shut, and the rubber front piece is flexible - rather than pushing teeth together - so alignment is less affected. It's a little more expensive, but worth it.

I too have this product. It's been less than a month and it's completely falling apart in the front. The blue "custom" fit. I guess it's only custom for so long. Kinda dangerous to wake up in the middle of the night with plastic pieces floatin in your mouth.

i have had this less than 10 days and it is already falling apart. the bite strip part seems ok, but i think the molded part that is supposed to hold it in place is designed poorly, and will never last long. does anybody from the company read these things--how about some consideration??

This mouthguard is ill fitting, is painful to wear and hurts my front teeth. It's so uncomfortable that I find that I often force it out of my mouth during the night. On the bright side it has stopped the grinding (when I'm able to keep it in my mouth, that is) but I am left to wonder if it's damaging my other teeth due to the fact it doesn't fit properly.

I like how easy it was to adjust to my mouth and I think it is worth the money, because it is working fine for me and I immediately felt the benefits of not grinding my teeth. My morning Headaches are gone.
Thanks

It hurts my front teeth alittle...I may have formed it to tightly. My TMJ pain has gotten better though, so I can't complain. My daughter and husband now have one also and it is working great for them too.
